iPhone Photo Not Accepted? Converting HEIC to JPG for Upload Forms

Why iPhone photos are saved as HEIC, why many websites refuse them, and the two ways to get a JPG: convert the file, or change the camera setting.

What HEIC is

iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image) format by default. It keeps the same quality as JPG in a smaller file, which saves space on the phone. Many government, bank and job portals, however, accept only JPG, PNG or PDF and show “invalid file type” for a HEIC photo.

Convert photos you already took

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG tool and add the photos (several at once is fine).
  2. Download the JPG files. The conversion happens in your browser; the photos are not uploaded.
  3. Upload the JPG to the form. If it is too large, use an image or PDF compressor afterwards.

Save as JPG from now on

On the iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos taken earlier stay HEIC and still need converting.
